Rejoicing in the Roses at the Gardens of the American Rose Center

Rejoicing in the Roses, a celebration of contemporary praise music is set for Sunday, October 17, 2010, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Gardens of the American Rose Center. Three outstanding local praise groups will be performing live in the Gardens at the Windsounds Carillon Tower. Refreshments will be sold.

Gardens of the American Rose Center
Home of the American Rose Society, the Gardens of the American Rose Center was created in 1974 through the contributions of rose lovers around the world. The 118-acre park contains more than 65 individual gardens with each bed and planting specially designed to demonstrate ways roses can be grown in the average home garden. It is conveniently located just off of I-20, Exit 5, in Shreveport, LA.

It's festival time in Louisiana! Actually Louisiana is home to so many festivals that on any given weekend there is a party somewhere. The party is happening in Monroe, Louisiana at the DeltaFest on April 14-18 at the Monroe Civic Center.

Jazz on the River 2010: A Continuum of New Orleans Jazz

The Arna Bontemps African American Museum will present its 15th Annual Jazz on the River, Saturday, April 17, 2010, at the Alexandria Amphitheatre in downtown Alexandria. Jazz on the River 2010, which is being held in conjunction with the South West Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tennis Championship Tournament April 15-17, will feature award winning international entertainer Kathy Wade “The First Voice of a New Era” of Cincinnati and The Nile Rhythm Band featuring Maynard Batiste in a free evening concert (6-10 PM) on the banks of the scenic Red River.

Also performing will be the Bontempian Big Band, a 16-20-piece jazz ensemble comprised of outstanding Central Louisiana high school students who participate in a jazz residency under the direction of noted music educator Wilmer Christophe.

Kathy Wade, #1 Jazz and Blues Vocalist on MP3.com; #1MP3.com Jazz Vocal Time to Say Good-bye featured on Sci-Fi network’s First Wave sound track and featured in Essence Magazine, March 1999 (Teaching With Music). Kathy is an award winning international entertainer whose “rich interpretative skills as a song stylist extraordinaire” capture the imagery of emotion on her recording, You Got The Magic and upcoming release, Kathy Wade, Klassic. (DAKA Music) “Magic,” recorded in Los Angeles, accents Kathy’s “multi-octave contralto of effervescent energy” with world-renowned musicians including Gerald Albright, Harvey Mason and GRAMMY nominated arranger, Producer/Pianist, Bill Cunliffe. Kathy has opened for Dionne Warwick, Cleo Laine, Nancy Wilson, Diane Schuur, Shirley Horn, Anita Baker, Kenny G, Whitney Houston, David Sanborn, George Benson, Al Jarreau, Stephanie Mills, Jonathan Butler, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Will Downing, Najee and Ramsey Lewis.

The Nile Rhythm Band featuring Maynard Batiste, Jazz pianist and composer, “taking Jazz and Rhythm to another level.” Mr. Batiste is the son of the late, great Alvin Batiste, Jazz clarinetist.

Jazz on the River is a free outdoor community jazz concert sponsored by the Arna Bontemps Museum every year since 1996. The organization has three major reasons for producing and presenting this program:

• to provide audiences outside of New Orleans and the “Jazz Corridor” a chance to experience live jazz, one of Louisiana’s richest art forms and arguably its greatest gift to the world;
  
  
• to cultivate more venues for the performance of jazz in Central Louisiana, of which there are very few;
  
  
• to showcase the art form which profoundly influenced Arna Bontemps and other artists of his era – the Harlem Renaissance and the Jazz Age – including Langston Hughes, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, James Joyce, and Ernest Hemingway. Over the past ten years, Jazz on the River has evolved into Central Louisiana’s premiere jazz event, each year featuring an impressive line-up of internationally acclaimed jazz artists and local talents. Past performers include Ellis Marsalis, Alvin Batiste, Kathy Wade, the Ed Perkins Quartet, the Quamon Fowler Quintet featuring Grammy®-nominee Maurice Brown, Kent Jordan, and Grammy®-winner Nicholas Payton.

Jazz on the River 2010 is a continuum of New Orleans jazz, the birthplace of jazz.

Alive After 5 will kick off with “A Night of Theatre”

The Natchitoches Main Street Program will begin Alive After 5 on February 19 with “A Night of Theatre”.

The first Alive After 5 event, “A Night of Theatre”, will be held on Friday, Feb. 19 at the Natchitoches Arts Center located at 716 Second Street. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the show will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The show is free and open to the public but seating is limited. Refreshments will be available to those attending.

NSU theatre students will present an evening of theatrical entertainment combining the talents of singers and performers. Musical Theatre students will sing a wide range of Broadway favorites and the “Out On a Limb” Improv Troupe will perform improvisational comedy scenes between songs. The performances will be suitable for all audiences.

Alive After 5 is a six month series of evening events taking place from February to July. The series includes art events, concerts, theatre and other cultural events which will all take place in the Natchitoches Historic District.

All events are free to the public and tourists and residents alike are encouraged to become more engaged in downtown arts and culture. Additional Alive After 5 events will be held on March 12, April 9, May 22, June 12 and July 4.

Alive After 5 is supported by a grant from the Louisiana State Arts Council, the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, and the Shreveport Regional Arts Council. Additional funding is provided by the Natchitoches Historic District Development Commission.

Boogie on the Bricks and Fall Farmer's Market in Natchitoches

Boogie on the Bricks will return on Nov. 7

Outdoor concert will feature 80s cover band BOOMERANG

After the Northwestern home football game on Saturday, Nov. 7, enjoy a free concert and street dance in downtown Natchitoches.

Boogie on the Bricks will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Front Street after the NSU home football game against Southeastern, which will kickoff at 2 p.m. at Turpin Stadium on Nov. 7.

The concert will feature BOOMERANG, one of southwest Louisiana’s most exciting and popular bands. BOOMERANG covers many 80s songs in addition to other types of dance music such as R&B, soul, funk, classic rock, country and swamp pop.

BOOMERANG is known to generate a party atmosphere wherever they perform and their music will make you want to move and groove from the first note to the last.

Boogie on the Bricks has received several awards for its contributions to the Natchitoches Historic District including the Louisiana Main Street Award for Best Image Building Promotion.

Last fall harvest at the
Cane River Green Market on Oct. 31

The Cane River Green Market will hold a final “Fall Harvest” market on Sat. Oct. 31, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the downtown riverbank.

Besides fresh fruits, vegetables and plants, customers can choose from a selection of “value-added products” including farm fresh eggs, homemade breads, jams, jellies and pickles. Abba’s organics will have sweet and hot peppers, lettuce, okra, beans and other seasonal produce.

Craft vendors will also be on site with hand-made crafts such as woodwork, artwork, jewelry, candles, soaps, pottery, furniture and more.


On Oct. 31, enjoy live music by The Lukejazz Trio from 10 a.m. to noon. The Lukejazz Trio is an exciting jazz group with a repertoire consisting of jazz standards and originals in the swing, Latin and bebop styles with moods that range from exhilarating to romantic.

WesMar Farms will be onsite with their goat milk products including milk, cheeses and soaps. This will be your last opportunity for market favorites such as smoked boudain, hot tamales, crab dips, sweet potatoes and honey.

City Park Players presents BlackJack : A Thief of Possession, October 15 -18 at the Hearn Stage in downtown Alexandria, LA.
Performances are scheduled Thursday – Saturday Evenings at 7:30 and on Sundays at 2:30 in the afternoon.

Black Jack is a play by Rosary Hartel O’Neill, directed by Dan Forest. It follows an eccentric New Orleans family as it is squeezed into the close quarters of a Mississippi Riverboat cruise for the New Year’s holiday. Irene, the matriarch of the family, suspects a rift in her estranged daughter's second marriage. Her Latin assistant sets her sights on the grandson, a successful rock star. Kaitlyn, the daughter, is convinced that she is channeling the poet Baudelaire, and certain that her husband, Beau, a brilliant novelist, is having an affair with a larger-than-life character, Rory DeBango. Everyone dons costumes for a New Year's Eve Party, casting off their old identities. As fireworks explode, cracks are revealed in the family’s façade and ugly truths belie frivolity.

Theresa Louviere is the wealthy New Orleans Garden District matriarch, Irene Soniat DuBonnet. Her daughter, Kaitlyn Dubonnet Ellis, is portrayed by Kim Patton. Beau Ellis is played by Casey Scarbrock and Susan Hathorn is Rory DeBango. Bunky Dubonnet Legere is played by Danny Higdon with Christal Workman as Luisa.

In the continuation of our Community Connections initiative we salute Central Louisiana Arts & Healthcare, a not for profit organization whose mission is to bring innovative arts experiences into healthcare settings. They work to enhance the environment of hospitals and healthcare facilities by providing public performances in lobbies and waiting areas, rotating art galleries, and in-room healing arts experiences for patients and families. We invite you to view the "Chairs For Charity" exhibit on display in the lobby of The Hearn Stage. Twelve chairs creatively decorated and painted by Studio Artists at Ethel Dixon's Studio are being auctioned (final bidding takes place Oct. 16). Proceeds will go to help Central Louisiana Arts & Healthcare continue its healing arts programs.

Southern Forest Heritage Museum to host Liberty Fest

The Southern Forest Heritage Museum will host Liberty Fest on Saturday, July 4 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. This event promises to be a day of good old fashioned fun!!! Come explore and enjoy this 40 acre historic sawmill complex as we celebrate American pride on the Nation's birthday.

Historic World War II items will be displayed in a special exhibit which will be centered around our connection to the manufacture of Higginsboats. Memorabilia will be on loan from both The National World War II Museum in New Orleans and the Louisiana Maneuvers and Military Museum on Camp Beauregard in Pineville. A model Higgins boat will be on display, as well.

There will be a special guest appearance by an original"Rosie-the-Riveter," Ethel Kelley who has been honored by the Smithsonian. She will be on hand with her costume and some memorabilia.

Historic World War II films will be shown in our theatre. This mini film festival will run throughout the day.

A parade is being planned. We will have water slides, and angel train rides for the children and rail motorcar rides for everyone. There will be hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks sold on site. No ice chests are allowed. Admission is $5 per person. Children under 3 years old are free.

14th Annual Natchitoches Jazz/R&B Festival

The Natchitoches Jazz/R&B Festival will be held on Natchitoches’ downtown riverbank on April 3-4, 2009.

The Festival schedule includes a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the legendary James Burton; Grammy award winner Anders Osborne; New Orleans favorite Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews and his band Orleans Avenue; and “the ultimate Eagles experience,” Seven Bridges Road. Local favorites Johnny Earthquake and the Moondogs will also be performing at the Festival.

Food vendors will be available throughout the weekend offering festival food faire.

The 2009 Jazz/R&B Festival will be a two-day long event beginning Friday evening with NSU College Night beginning at 6:00 p.m. Saturday will kick off at 11:45 p.m. with entertainment on two stages.

The Natchitoches Star competition winner will be announced during the Festival and the three finalists will perform throughout the day Saturday. A rock-climbing wall will be the highlight of the numerous children’s activities that will be available throughout the festival day.

There will be VIP parking available for motorcycles, and festival attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

Admission to the festival will be $8 per adult, $4 per student/military personnel with I.D., and children 12 and under free if purchased in advance. Natchitoches Jazz/R&B Festival 2009 lineup

With a hitmaking country/R&B artist with a dozen top ten hits to his name; a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and one of the top guitarists in the world; a Grammy award winning Rock, R&B, and Blues singer/songwriter; the hottest Jazz, Rock and Funk performer out of New Orleans; and a tribute to perhaps the greatest American rock band of all time, the 2009 Natchitoches Jazz/R&B Festival truly promises "something for everyone." The Festival which will be held April 3rd and 4th on the historic and picturesque downtown riverbank in Natchitoches, will begin with NSU College Night on Friday, and continue with music on three stages all day Saturday beginning at noon.

Featured performers at this year's Festival include country star T. GRAHAM BROWN. Brown has been writing and recording hit records for over twenty years and has charted more than twenty singles on the Billboard Hot Country songs chart. Three of these singles -- "Hell and High Water", "Don't Go To Strangers", and "Darlene" reached number one and eight more reached the top ten. T. Graham Brown has received a CMA award for his efforts.

While Brown's hits have been on the country charts, his influences are grounded in rhythm and blues and is well known as a crossover artist.

JAMES BURTON is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was named by Rolling Stone magazine as "one of the top guitarists of all time." Having played on countless records as a session musician, Burton found his greatest fame first as Ricky Nelson's guitarist making regular appearances on The Ozzie and Harriet Show, and then Elvis Presley's lead guitarist and band leader from 1969 until Elvis' death in 1977. Burton was also John Denver's lead guitarist for several years and has played with many major artists including Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lee Lewis and George Harrison. Pete Townsend of the Who once called Burton: "The most important guitarist in American music history." Burton was also a guest performer on Brad Paisley's most recent album.

Burton holds the "James Burton International Guitar Festival" every year which raises money to purchase guitars for children in schools and children's hospitals. Burton will be performing with Natchitoches group Johnny Earthquake and the Moondogs.

Singer/songwriter ANDERS OSBORNE has made the Festival a part of his "Southern Troubadour Tour 2009." Osborne was born in Sweden. As soon as he was old enough, he moved to New Orleans where he has become a widely respected and Grammy winning Rock, R&B, and Blues guitarist and vocalist. Osborne has recorded nine albums and since 1994 has been working as a professional songwriter and producer in Nashville. His song "Watch The Wind Blow By" was recorded by country music star Tim McGraw and Hit No. 1 on the country charts.

TROY "TROMBONE SHORTY" ANDREWS and his band, ORLEANS AVENUE are easily the hottest and more eclectic musical act in New Orleans. Trombone Shorty's versatility is illustrated by the fact that he is up for "Artist of the Year" and "Best Trumpet Player," and he and his band are up for "Best R&B Funk Artist" in the annual Best of the Beat Music Awards in New Orleans, while he previously won the award as "Performer of the Year" and "Best Contemporary Jazz Performer," Trombone Shorty and his high energy band receive rave reviews wherever they play and he has toured with Lenny Kravitz and performed with U2, Green Day, Dr. John, and many others. The Edge, U2's guitarist, described Trombone Shorty's unique blend of Rock, Funk, R&B, Jazz and Soul as "Unbelievable! It is just not anything you are going to hear anywhere else."

SEVEN BRIDGES ROAD -- "THE ULTIMATE EAGLES EXPERIENCE" has been described as "the closest you will come to seeing a live Eagles concert without paying $200 for a ticket." 33rd Red River Revel Arts Festival

Arts, education, music, food, fun, and children. What do all of these words have in common? They are all part of one of the largest arts festivals in North Louisiana, the 33rd Red River Revel, which is to be held October 4th-11th. This arts celebration has it all. Every year this celebration gets bigger and better.

When the Red River Revel began 33 years ago, the primary goal, according to the Revel website, was arts education for children. That goal is evident in all of the events slated for this festival.
There is so much to do and see at the Revel.

Children's events include: SciPort activity area, Shreve Memorial Library Book Walk & Storytelling, Northwest Louisiana Food Bank clay pot painting, kid fish, mock geological dig, architecture alive, Brookshire's grocery store, tot tent, Christus Schumpert Sutton Children's mini medical center, climbing wall, sand art, creation station and more. This is a hands-on festival where children are able to get their hands dirty and be free to use their imaginations to create one-of-a-kind art in a creative atmosphere. This festival teaches children that an arts education is valuable and that the world around them is full of art.

Other children's events include three time Grammy nominee, Trout Fishing in America; a student art exhibit "All things....India" at the Barnwell Gardens and Arts Center; and Children's Sewing Day, Saturday, October 11th, at Riverview Hall, sponsored by Red River Quilters.

The Red River Revel has fantastic food that is not your typical fair food. Some of the dishes are more foods you would find in a restaurant such as fajitas, dirty rice, gumbo, turkey legs, blakened catfish, Natchitoches meat pies, chicken fried rice and more. But for the diehard festival lover the Revel does have funnel cakes, hot dogs, hamburgers and other yummy festival fare. North Louisiana offers a variety of dishes with many different cultural tastes. And many of these scrumptious dishes can be sampled at the Revel. Bring your appetite and a sense of adventure and enjoy the flavors that Louisiana has to offer.

In addition to the children's activities, live music and great food, there will be over 100 visual artists selling all types of artwork--jewelry, watercolor, painting, wood, photography, glass, metal, ceramics, pottery, drawing and more.

The Revel is open daily at 11:00 a.m. Admission is free: all day on Monday, and until 5:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday.
